Bridging Maternal Health and Housing Stability for

U.S.-Born Historically Underrepresented families in Minnesota

Our mission is to create a holistic approach that tackles the urgent needs of affordable housing and maternal support simultaneously. Through our affordable housing initiatives, pregnant and expecting parents will receive essential support to secure stable homes. At the same time, our community-based Childbirth Ed Series will offer empowerment and education to mothers before, during, and after childbirth.

The Nurturing Homes Project is built on the understanding that housing and maternal health are interconnected components of well-being. Addressing them together is vital for delivering comprehensive and equitable care. We are committed to fostering a supportive and empowering environment where maternal health can thrive, breaking free from the constraints of structural inequities.

Nurturing Homes Project FAQ

  • The Nurturing Homes Project is a comprehensive initiative uniquely designed to address the intrinsic connection between housing stability and maternal health challenges within U.S.-born African American communities.

  • Through this program, pregnant and expecting parents will receive essential support to secure stable homes. At the same time, our community-based childbirth education workshops led by full spectrum doulas will offer empowerment and education to mothers they can implement for before, during, and after childbirth.

The Nurturing Homes Project has two components: the maternal education component and the community resource navigation component. The Community Resource Navigation (CRN) services are limited to a set number of participants.

  • We prioritize pregnant people who are experiencing housing instability in Minnesota.

  • Cohort 4 runs every Saturday, July 19 through August 9, 2026, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM CT. Applications open Friday June 20th through July 6th. Two more cohorts are planned this program year:

November through December 2026 and March 2027. Check our website or Instagram for updated application windows ahead of each cohort.

  • CRN program is where help navigate and access community resources and help you solve your housing crisis. This includes providing financial assistance with housing, assistance navigating county/state services and accessing other essential resources to support overall well-being.

  • Housing assistance is disbursed at the end of each cohort, once all four sessions are complete. Per current state requirements, funds are issued directly from Seeds Worth Sowing to your landlord, not to you directly. You can choose to apply the full amount to rent, or split it with half going to your landlord and half toward utilities.

  • Yes. See our Drop-In Family Days above. These are free, come-and-go events open to anyone who is currently pregnant or freshly postpartum, no application required.

  • Led by team members of Birth Revolution, you will be learning:

    • The basics of informed decision-making during pregnancy, labor, and beyond.

    • Hands-on comfort measures and support techniques

    • Understanding the physiology and process of childbirth

    • Exploring traditional postpartum care

    • Early newborn care

    • The basics of infant feeding (including breastfeeding, chestfeeding and bottle feeding)

  • Have more questions to ask? Upcoming sessions will be virtual and on

We extend our heartfelt thank you to the Office of African American Health at the Minnesota Department of Health for their invaluable collaboration and partnership in making this initiative a reality. We firmly believe that there are solutions to solving housing crises within African American communities, particularly for those who are pregnant. Maternal challenges encompass more than just pregnancy-related issues; they also include social challenges, with housing being a significant factor.

Join us in this transformative journey as we strive to create nurturing homes where maternal health and stability flourish. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of mothers and families, ensuring a brighter, healthier future for all.
